Brushing and flossing are the best ways to prevent cavities, however the toothbrush cannot always get into those deep grooves in your molars. This is where sealants come into play. Sealants are a thin, protective coating that flows into the grooves and hardens.
Somewhat like a filling but no drilling is involved. It fills the groove to prevent food, sugars etc. from doing damage in those hard to clean areas.
Children and adults can benefit from them, but the best time to place sealants is in newly erupted teeth. The first molars usually appear around age 6, the second molars around age 12.
It is a very quick procedure, no needles, numbing, or drilling. The tooth will be cleaned & dried, an etchant will be applied then rinsed, then a bonding agent is applied and then the sealant material is flowed into the groove and then cured onto the tooth. That’s it, it’s quick and simple.
Sealants can last for a long time and will be rechecked at each visit. Most insurance companies cover sealants. It is much better to prevent cavities then dealing with what may happen down the road.
Thinking that sealants may be something that would be best for you or your little one, MYRDH Dental Hygiene Spa can have a look and let you know. Sealants are one of our many services that we offer.
